CervicalCheck is warning a lack of trust in screening programmes is causing women with cancer to risk their health and lives.
The programme's clinical director Dr Nóirín Russell has claimed some are turning to “weird and wacky” treatments.
The service is also reporting recruitment issues following the controversy which has affected the programme.
Plans to transfer most lab work from the United States to Ireland next year are in jeopardy as the fallout from the 2018 controversy over a botched internal audit is leading to recruitment problems.
Consultant obstetrician Dr Peter Boylan, a former chair of the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, says struggling to recruit staff isn't a surprise.
Dr Boylan said: “The fear of litigation, as we all know is rife in Irish society, means people are fearful of going into jobs where it's likely they're going to be sued if there are problems which are similar to problems right around the world.”
He added: “Every screening programme around the world — Australia, the United States, the UK — they all have the same incidents of screening difficulties if you like.”
