A 23-year-old Cork man has pleaded guilty at the Special Criminal Court to possession of 263 rounds of ammunition in suspicious circumstances.

Daniel Sheehan of Churchfield Avenue, Churchfield, Cork appeared before the three-judge, non-jury court on Monday where he was arraigned on the single charge that on June 3rd last year he had in his possession 263 rounds of ammunition in circumstances that give rise to a reasonable inference that he did not have them for a lawful purpose at Churchfield Avenue in Cork City.

Sheehan is also charged with membership of an illegal organisation, namely the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Óglaigh na hÉireann, at a location within the State on the same date.

Maddie Grant BL, for the State, told the court that the plea in relation to the ammunition charge will "meet the case".

Mr Justice Tony Hunt adjourned the matter until January 22nd for sentencing.
