So far, GoSafe checked the speed of 5,228 vehicles and detected 40 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.

A Galway motorist was recorded doing 149km/h in a 120km/h zone on the M6 An Carn Mór Thiar Órán Mór Galway within the first five hours of National Slow Down Day.

The operation started at 7am on Friday morning. They will be checking motorists over Christmas and the New Year to prevent further deaths.

So far, GoSafe checked the speed ofof 28,569 vehicles and detected 120 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.

The next highest speed was recorded in Cork, where a motorist was recorded trvalleing 145km/h on a 120km/h zone on the M8 Ballinglanna North Kilworth Cork.

Other high speeds include a driver doing 130km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the N4 Greatdown, at the Downs Co Westmeath.

While in Cavan, a driver was recorded doing 83km/h in a 60km/h Zone on the Dublin Road.

So far, 181 people have died on Irish roads this year, an increase of 29 on this time last year.

Gardaí appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads.
