Gardaí discovered 15 dead roosters and 70 roosters were seized alongside evidence of suspected "cock fighting" following a search of a private residence in Co Monaghan.

A suspected animal welfare incident is being investigated by Gardaí following the receipt of a report of a suspected illegal "cock fighting" event taking place at a private residence in Emyvale, Co Monaghan on Saturday morning, 27th July.

At around 11am on Saturday, gardaí received the report and upon the arrival of gardaí, numerous people fled the scene.

Gardaí received the assistance of the Department of Agriculture and obtained a warrant to search the residence under Section 45 of the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013.

During the course of the search, 15 dead roosters were discovered on the property while a further 70 roosters were seized by Department of Agriculture personnel. Evidence of suspected "cock fighting" was also seized.

The investigation is continuing at Monaghan Garda Station and Gardaí continue to liaise with the Department of Agruculture.
