A local group has launched a fundraiser for the victime of last week's assault, who is a man in his 20s.

The GoFundMe page has a target of €2,000, and has so far raised €1,745 from 88 donations.

It reads: "On Sunday last, a refugee from Gaza was set upon by a group of men in Athlone Town. The man had fled the Israeli bombings. He sought refuge from the Irish who are said to be 'in solidarity' with Palestine, hoping to pave the way for his family's safe passage.

"But on Sunday last in Athlone Town, our refugee from Gaza was 'left dazed and couldn't talk' after being attacked by a group of men, beaten and punched about the head, neck and chest. After the trauma of Gaza, the paramedics were needed again.
"This Christmas, let us help restore our faith in humanity. Any donation, no matter how small will be given directly to help this refugee and his family.
"Thank you and Happy Christmas!
"Athlone Town."
