Funeral for Limerick boxer Kevin Sheehy takes place today

The funeral for champion Limerick boxer Kevin Sheehy took place this morning at Holy Family Church, Southill, at 11am, with the funeral afterwards to Mount St Oliver Cemetery.

Sheehy was killed in a hit-and-run on Hyde Road in Limerick on Monday.

The Holy Family Church in Southill was full to capacity for the funeral of Kevin Sheehy.

A number of symbols were brought up to the altar, capturing who the 20 year-old was.

Among the gifts were a boxing trophy, his boots and the medal from his last fight to symbolise his dedication to the sport, money to show his love of saving for all his dreams, and a picture of his fiancée Emma and the baby girl that they are expecting.

Chief celebrant Fr Tom Carroll told the congregation that on Sunday 'we basked in the glory of Limerick's hurling success but on Monday, we were stopped in our tracks'.

Fr Carroll says Kevin is destined to join the pantheon of sporting heroes in Limerick.

Trisha Colbert spoke on behalf of her daughter Emma, Kevin's finacée and mother to their unborn daughter: "You were determined to be not only the best boxer you could be, but also the best daddy to our daughter.

"Kev, please give me the strength I need because I don't want to be in this world without you."

Yesterday, hundreds of mourners paid their respects at the removal for the boxing champion.

A man has been charged with the 20-year-old's murder.
