He was taken to University Hospital Letterkenny where a post mortem is expected to be carried out on the body.

The cause of the man’s death is still not known.

Gardaí say the results of their post-mortem will assist them in determining the course of their investigations.

Local county councillor Jack Murray said the thoughts and prayers of the local community were with the deceased and his family.

He asked the public to ensure to call in on their elderly and vulnerable neighbours during this cold snap.

He said “We still don’t know who this man was or how he died but our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family at this time.

“While we cannot say how he died, I would still like to remind people to check on their neighbours, especially those living alone during this cold snap.

“It only takes five minutes and many elderly people are simply terrified to come out of their homes when the weather is so bad.

“That one visit could be vital and I would ask people to take those few minutes just to check on those living alone around them," he said.
