A 23-year-old man attacked two gardaí who responded to reports of an attempted break-in at a Dublin care home for troubled teens, a court heard.
Fuhad Ganiyu, who has no fixed abode, was refused bail after being charged with assault causing harm to two officers in the south of the city on Sunday night.
The unemployed man appeared before Judge Shalom Binchy at Dublin District Court on Monday.
Garda Edel Murphy said the accused made no reply to the charges, and she objected to bail due to concerns that he would not turn up to court.
She said that at 10:20 pm, gardaí responded to a male attempting to “break in” to a children’s care home “for troubled teenagers”.
The contested bail hearing was told there was CCTV evidence.
The incident “resulted in fear,” and residents at the facility locked themselves into an upstairs room.
It was alleged Mr Ganiyu was directed to stop, led gardaí on a foot chase, and “a physical altercation ensued”, resulting in Garda Murphy and a colleague being harmed.
The judge heard claims he attempted to abscond from gardaí when allowed a cigarette break and “caused a disruption on the way to court”.
Mr Ganiyu, visibly upset, pleaded for bail.
His barrister submitted that the accused abide by bail conditions, including a curfew and a requirement to sign on daily at a Garda station.
He had experienced homelessness but would be able to live with his mother in Tallaght, who was in court to support him.
Judge Binchny denied the bail application and remanded him in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court on Friday. Mr Ganiyu began shouting and was escorted from the courtroom.
He was granted legal aid but has not indicated a plea to the charges.
