Two people have been injured following a collision between a car and a train in Co Mayo.

Gardaí and emergency services remain at the scene near Claremorris where the collision took place shortly before 3.30pm on Saturday.

The incident, involving the 12.45 Dublin Heuston to Westport service, occurred at an unattended level crossing on a rural road at Garryredmond.

The man driving the car and the teenage male front-seat passenger have been airlifted to Galway University Hospital where their conditions are stable.

Gardaí said they are currently liaising with the family of the car occupants.

In an update at around 6.20pm, Irish Rail said it was awaiting permission from Gardaí to allow the passengers to detrain and board replacement buses.

Shortly after 7pm, Irish Rail tweeted that the passengers had been given permission to detrain.

Gardaí said they are investigating all of the circumstance surrounding the incident and appealed for anyone with information to contact Claremorris Garda station on 094-937 2080, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666 111, or any Garda station.
