Speaking at the launch of the Government's White Paper ahead of the budget next week, Minister Donohoe said he did not want to comment on the matter until he had fully familiarised himself with the ramifications of such a measure.
Earlier today, a Government source said adding an extra week to this year's break "has been discussed briefly", but it was understood that the issue has not been formally considered and no contact has been made with unions or schools as of yet.
In a statement issued after the news had broke, the Department of Education said no decision had been taken yet on the extension.
Keeping schools open has been a priority of the Government and the National Public Health Emergency Team (Nphet) since they reopened in September, but many countries across Europe are not said to be considering the measure in an attempt to slow the spread of the Covid-19.
Schools are due to close for mid-term break between Monday, October 26th and Friday, October 30th.
