A group collecting Christmas presents for people who are homeless or in need has said it is devastated after gifts were stolen overnight.

Fran Dempsey of the group said it was storing gifts in the van due to a lack of space, which was also damaged in the incident.

“We don’t have a lot of storage space, so we leave a lot of stuff in the van,” he said.

“It’s been safe so far, but unfortunately last night, during the early hours of the night... the major stuff was taken out of the van. The van was broken into, and it’s just, it’s horrible.”

Mr Dempsey said the group hopes to deliver hundreds of hampers to those in need this Christmas.

“We’re actually just doing over 200 hampers this year for Christmas, hopefully, for people in need and the homeless,” he said.

“There’s a lot of shoe boxes as well, and we’re already collected a few things from people that donated.”
