An Irishman has been arrested over the stabbing of a compatriot at a holiday apartment in the Costa Blanca resort of Benidorm.

The victim was seriously injured after being knifed in the shoulder.

Police have confirmed the incident and the arrest.

A spokesman for Benidorm’s local police force said in a short statement: “Our officers have arrested an Irish national on suspicion of stabbing a compatriot.

“Fortunately the victim is now out of danger.”

The arrest occurred around lunchtime on Wednesday at an apartment complex in the resort’s Rincon de Loix area.

The two men are understood to have got into a fight for reasons that have not yet been made public.

Police have confirmed the person held is aged 20 but no details about the victim apart from his nationality have so far been revealed.

Officers found him “semi-conscious” near the crime scene after he managed to flee his attacker and he was rushed to the Marina Baixa Hospital in Villlajoyosa near Benidorm.

The knife the detained Irishman is said to have used to stab his alleged victim has been described as having a 21 centimetre (eight inch) blade.

It was not immediately clear on Friday morning if the two men knew each other and were staying in the same holiday flat - and whether the suspect has already appeared in court for a remand hearing and been sent to prison or released on bail pending an ongoing investigation.

A 68-year-old Irishman died in hospital after a separate stabbing in the same resort last November.

He was rushed to hospital with multiple stab wounds to his chest, abdomen, head and left leg but lost his fight for life hours later.

A 62-year-old British man described at the time as his flatmate was arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide and wounding before the other man died.

He was also hospitalised with stab wounds and put under police guard in hospital.

A judge was due to place him under formal investigation for homicide after he recovered from his injuries, although authorities could not provide an immediate update on the case early on Friday.
