A man has been killed in a single-vehicle crash in Co Longford overnight.

The incident happened in Ballymahon shortly before 1am on Monday.

The driver of the car, a man aged in his 30s, was treated at the scene by emergency services, but was later pronounced dead.

His remains have been taken to Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course.

The road at Ballymahon has been closed to traffic while a forensic examination of the crash scene is carried out, with local diversions in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses, including those with camera/dash-cam footage from the area at the time of the incident, to contact Ballymahon Garda station on 090-643 2303, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666 111, or any Garda station.
