An arrest has been made in Co Mayo following an incident in Ballina during which a man armed with a knife barricaded himself into a supermarket.
Gardaí were called to the scene at Market Square in the town on Wednesday night after receiving reports that a man was brandishing a knife in a threatening manner.
Gardaí confirmed to the Western People that the man, aged in his 30s, had secured himself in the premises when officers reached the scene and threatened to harm himself.
A Garda spokesperson added that no other persons were in the premises at the time.
The man remained in the shop for several hours, with members of the Garda Emergency Response Unit closing off the area and surrounding the building.
The incident was brought to an end shortly after 10pm when armed gardaí forced entry to the building and arrested the man.
The man remained in custody at Ballina Garda station on Thursday morning.
