He is currently being held at Dundalk Garda station under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007.

He can be held for up to seven days before being charged or released.

The 32-year-old is suspected to have been part of the group of the raiders who targeted a cash pick-up at a Co Louth Credit Union during which Det Garda Donohoe, a father-of-two, was shot dead.

Det Garda Donohoe was shot as he stepped from his Garda car after he and a colleague arrived at Lordship Credit Union, Bellurgan, Co Louth, to provide an armed escort for staff carrying cash.

The man is believed to have close links to both smuggling operations and dissident paramilitaries in the Border area.

To date, just one of the five-person gang has been convicted for his murder. Last year Aaron Brady (30) was convicted of capital murder following a massive Garda investigation and a lengthy trial. He was sentenced to a minimum of 40 years in prison.

Brady of New Road in Crossmaglen, Co Armagh was also sentenced to 14 years, to run concurrently, for robbery.

At the time Garda Deputy Commissioner John Twomey promised gardaí would continue to work on the case until all the suspects are brought to justice.
