A man has appeared before Cork District Court charged with smashing the windows of a garda station in Gurranabraher on the northside of the city with a hatchet and damaging a garda patrol car.
Roy Philpott (40), of Spriggs Road, Gurranabraher, Cork, was arrested on Thursday afternoon and detained for questioning at a garda station in the city. He was brought before the district court on Friday.
Mr Philpott is charged with attending Gurranabraher Garda Station on Thursday afternoon and breaking the windows of a garda patrol car.
He is also charged with a similar count where it is alleged that he caused criminal damage to glass panes and windows at the front of the garda station.
Mr Philpott is also charged with allegedly having a Stanley knife in his possession and a black and orange handled hatchet with a sharply pointed blade at Gurranabraher Garda Station on Bakers Road on Thursday afternoon.
No further details of the alleged offence emerged during the brief hearing. It is understood that a man caused damage to the garda station in Gurranabraher shortly after 2pm on Thursday.
Sgt Pat Lyons said there was consent to bail in the case. He applied for an adjournment of the case until next year.
Garda Paul Dunphy said there was one required condition of bail, namely that Mr Philpott sign on at Gurranabraher Garda Station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 9am and 9pm. Mr Philpott has vowed to comply with the terms of his bail.
Solicitor Aoife Buttimer made a successful application for legal aid after the court heard that her client receives job seekers' allowance. Judge Mary Dorgan agreed to remand the accused on bail until his next court appearance on January 24th next year.
