Gardaí are investigating a fatal house fire at a property on the University of Limerick (UL) campus.
A man aged in 80s or 90s, who is understood to have been an academic, died in the blaze.
The fire broke out at a house at Kilmurry Village, one of UL's on-campus student accommodation sites, shortly before midnight.
The man’s body remains at the scene pending further investigations.
Fire Service control received the alert at 11.41pm and dispatched four tender units from Limerick City and Cappamore.
Firefighters spent five hours tending to the fire and dampening down the scene before returning to their bases after 5am on Friday morning.
Gardaí remain at the property and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed officers were alerted shortly before midnight on Thursday.
"A male was subsequently located deceased in the residence," the spokesperson added, confirmed a post-mortem examination will be carried out on Friday, the results of which will determine the course of the Garda investigation.
