AA roadwatch have reported icy conditions in some areas, advising motorists to use main roads where possible as they are more likely to have been gritted.
In Wicklow, the Sally Gap and Wicklow Gap are both impassable due to ice with motorists advised to use alternative routes.
Cathal Nolan, from Ireland's Weather Channel, says the cold snap will continue for the rest of the week.
"It is rare for us to have temperatures this low. During the winter months, we would typically see temperatures falling below freezing on upwards of between 20 to 30 nights per year, however, we are seeing exceptionally cold temperatures now.
"Certainly we are in the midst of a particularly cold spell."
