The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission is urging people to include a gift receipt with their presents.
A new survey revealed that a third of respondents say they never include gift receipts with Christmas presents, which could potentially lead to difficulties with returns or exchanges.
Director of communications of the CCPC, Gráinne Griffin, said gift receipts help avoid awkwardness.
"First of all, don't panic. You do need to be careful how much you spend," she said.
It's very easy to go above a budget at this stage. So we could encourage people to stay focused and to stick to their lists where they can.
"We would encourage consumers to give a gift receipt. It means that the person you're gifting the present to just has the option to go back and exchange it or get something for them if it isn't the right gift for them."
