Rail Travel Declines By Half As Passengers Heed Level 5 Guidelines

The amount of people using the train has nearly halved during the Level 5 Covid-19 restrictions while road traffic volumes have dropped by about a quarter.

According to the Central Statistics Office (CSO), car volumes for the week ending October 31st were 25.5 per cent lower than the previous week at regional locations, and 22.3 per cent lower in Dublin after increased restrictions came in on October 21st.

HGV volumes remained unaffected by the tightened measures in Dublin, exceeding 2019 levels for the 19th week in a row.

Overall public transport use has fallen by nearly 37 per cent but journeys by train have been most severely hit falling by over 47 per cent.

The data released today shows that despite a reduction in traffic volumes, road fatalities have increased by 11 compared to 2019 figures for the first nine months of the year.

The CSO also released air and sea travel statistics for September, showing a 29.8 per cent decrease in passengers arriving into Ireland during the month.

The figures showed a dramatic reduction on 2019 figures, when almost 1.9 million passengers arrivied and departed the country during the same month last year.

This year, 254,400 passengers arriving in Ireland from abroad, while 236,700 passengers departed Ireland during the month, marking a 27.9 per cent decrease on September 2019.
