Drivers are being urged to be careful on the roads this morning as a status yellow rain warning is in effect for 18 counties.
It includes all of Leinster along with counties Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Tipperary and Waterford.
Met Eireann is warning of a risk of localised flooding, poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions until early tomorrow.
The national forecaster said: "This morning, rain in Munster and south Leinster will spread northwards and extend into Ulster. It will continue through the day and will become heavy at times in parts of Leinster and Ulster. Western coastal counties will stay mainly dry. It will become mainly dry in Munster this evening. Highest temperatures of 13 to 18 degrees with moderate to fresh northeast winds."
The status yellow warning will remain in effect until 4am on Wednesday morning.
