Met Éireann has issued a status orange thunderstorm warning for five counties.
The alert is in place for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Tipperary and Waterford until 8pm on Tuesday.
The weather agency warned of potential flash flooding, very difficult travelling conditions, as well as potential damage to electricity lines.

A similar status yellow warning is running until 10pm in every other county apart from Kerry.
The UK Met Office has also issued a status yellow thunderstorm warning for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry.
That warning came into effect at 8am and will continue until 9pm.
