The fast-food restaurant chain, Supermac’s, has made a donation totalling €3,500 to two Galway charities to avoid a fine and conviction after pleading guilty to five breaches of data protection legislation.
The Data Protection Commission has welcomed the outcome of prosecution proceedings that were taken in Galway District Court this week.
Supermac’s Ireland Limited pleaded guilty to five counts of sending unsolicited marketing e-mails to a customer.
The court heard that the customer had notified the company that they did not wish to receive such e-mails.
The Data Protection Commission had previously issued a warning in February 2023 following investigations it had carried out on foot of previous complaints to it.
Judge Mary Fahy asked the company to make a contribution of €1,750 each to two charities – Galway Simon Community and Cope Galway – in lieu of a conviction and fine.
