Mark Ryan, one of two brothers who spoke out about their experience of sexual abuse while they were students at Blackrock College in South Dublin, has died aged 62.
Mr Ryan and his brother David shared their story in an RTÉ documentary last year, titled 'Blackrock Boys', in which they detailed the abuse they suffered at the hands of members of the Spiritan order.
The Ryans' revelations led to many more survivors coming forward and a scoping inquiry was later ordered to examine historical sexual abuse at schools run by religious orders.
As The Irish Times reports, it is understood Mr Ryan suffered a suspected heart attack, according to his brother.
Responding to the news, Minister for Education Norma Foley said she was "saddened beyond measure" to learn of Mr Ryan's death.
"Mark and his brother David showed immense courage in speaking out about the abuse that they suffered. Their bravery shone a light into a dark corner, and helped to forge a path for many others to come forward," the Minister added.
Ms Foley said she was always "struck by his genuine warmth, kind heartedness and enormous sense of compassion" in their meetings.
"I am especially conscious today that Mark was a strong support and advocate for many other survivors, and I truly appreciate the profound sense of loss that so many will be feeling at this time," Ms Foley said.
''I will remember Mark with enormous fondness and deep gratitude for his graciousness, leadership and selflessness.
"We are all the lesser for Mark’s passing, but greater for having had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, Mark. Thank you for everything," she added.
