Two people have been killed in separate road traffic collisions in Limerick and Louth overnight.
In Limerick, a pedestrian was killed in an incident involving two cars in Castletroy shortly before 10pm on Friday night.
The crash took place on the Dublin Road at around 9.50pm, with the driver of one of the cars failing to remain at the scene.
Gardaí added that this vehicle had been involved in an interaction with officers prior to the incident, so the matter has been referred to the Garda Síochana Ombudsman Commission (Gsoc) as required by law.
The male pedestrian was taken from the scene to University Hospital Limerick (UHL) where he was later pronounced dead.
A man and a woman from the second vehicle were also taken to UHL for treatment.
Gardaí confirmed the Dublin Road from the junction at Groody Roundabout through to the Gold Links Road has been closed to traffic while a technical examination of the scene is carried out. Local diversions have been put in place.
Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the collision, or anyone who was in the Dublin Road area of Castletroy between 9pm and 10pm on Friday to contact Henry Street Garda station on 061-212 400.
M1
In a separate collision in Co Louth, a man was pronounced following a crash involving a car and a tractor on the M1.
The collision occurred on the northbound carriageway between Junctions 12 and 14 at around 2am.
The man, aged in his 30s, was a passenger in the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other men aged in their 20s and 60s, who were also in the car, were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for treatment. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The northbound lanes of the M1 before Junction 13 have been closed while a forensic examination is carried out, with diversions in place, while the southbound lanes remain open.
