With ice, snow, sleet and rain encompassing a lot of the country this weekend, it does not seem as though the cold snap will end overnight.

With the entire country under a Status Yellow low temperature and ice warning until midday on Thursday, very cold nights with widespread frost and ice can be expected until at least then.

Temperatures are expected to struggle to get above freezing during the day, and potential impacts include icy patches, hazardous travelling conditions and travel disruption.

The entirety of Northern Ireland will also be under a Status Yellow ice warning from midnight until 11am on Monday.

So, keep reading to get an overview on what weather we can expect for the next few days.

On Monday, Met Éireann forecast widespread frost and lying snow, with bitterly cold temperatures. It also predicts sunshine and scattered showers of rain, hail, sleet and snow.

However, some thunder is possible on Monday and top temperatures will range from one to five degrees but will stay below freezing over snowfields.

Northwesterly winds will increase from moderate to fresh and gusty – but stronger for a time in Atlantic areas.

Tuesday is expected to be another very cold day, with sunshine and further scattered, few wintry showers in the west and north of the country.

Frost and ice are expected to linger in some areas all day with highest temperatures ranging from zero to five degrees in moderate northwest winds.

Severe frost on what is forecast to be a bitterly cold Tuesday night with minimum temperatures ranging from minus eight to minus three degrees. Areas of freezing fog is also expected to develop in some areas, leading to hazardous driving conditions.

Wednesday is not forecast to be much better, with areas of ice and freezing fog lingering in many areas throughout the day. However, where fog does clear, there will be spells of sunshine.

Maximum afternoon temperatures on Wednesday are expected to range from minus to plus three degrees, and it should be a little less cold in the northwest of the country.

There are further wintery showers forecast in northern and northwestern coastal fringes later in the day, though.

Another bitterly cold night is forecast for Wednesday with widespread frost and ice along with areas of freezing fog forecast once again. Some sleet and snow showers are also expected along northern and northwestern coastal areas, with lowest temperatures of minus seven to minus two degrees.

Any wintery showers in the north and northwest are predicted to die out on Thursday to give a mainly dry, chilly day with some sunshine. Frost and freezing fog may linger in some parts, however.

Maximum temperatures on Thursday are expected to be from minus two to plus five degrees – coldest in the south of the country.

Across Thursday night and Friday, rain, sleet and snow are currently forecast to spread northeastwards.

As of Sunday evening, however, Met Éireann forecast be a gradual improvement on temperatures over next weekend.
