A man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a 27-year-old mother of two whose body was found at an apartment in Midleton, Co Cork on Friday afternoon.

The 29-year-old man is being detained in Midleton Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. Investigations are continuing.

Meanwhile, Midleton-based Sinn Féin TD Pat Buckley said that the death of the woman in tragic circumstances had shocked and saddened locals.

“I only knew (the victim) her to see. I am thinking of her two children. Their lives destroyed. Life is very fickle.

"It has affected the town. My phone has been hopping. People can’t understand it. Our hearts go out to the family of this woman and they will be in our thoughts and prayers over the coming days.”

Meanwhile, the fire at the apartment was brought under control shortly after 5pm. Firefighters remained on site for a period afterwards in order to monitor the situation.

The Garda Press Office has said in a statement that gardai and the emergency services attended at the scene of the incident.

“Inquiries are ongoing, and no additional information is available at this time. Further updates will follow as they become available.”

A postmortem examination will be carried out at Cork University Hospital by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster.

The course of the investigation will be determined by the post-mortem results. It is understood the woman lived in the apartment.

The apartment is set to be forensically examined.

Firefighters were also called to the scene at the same time as a section of the property was on fire.

Gardaí are expected to start a door-to-door inquiry to determine if anyone in the area noticed anything suspicious this morning and in the afternoon.
