A woman aged in 70s who died while out walking close to home has been named locally.

Marian Morgan, who lived in the Tinryland area of Carlow and formerly worked for Carlow County Council was struck by a car at 6.30pm.

Emergency services including ambulances based in Carlow town and gardai rushed to the scene along the N80 close junction 5 and Tinryland Football pitch. The driver of the car was uninjured.

Gardaí cordoned off the scene overnight to allow for forensic crash investigators to examine the crash site. Road traffic diversions were in place through Kellistown and Bennekerry into Carlow town.

A man who worked with Ms Morgan, described her as being “an absolute lady”.

In a statement gardai said: “Gardaí are investigating a fatal road traffic collision that occurred on the N80 in the townland of Rathcrogue, Carlow.

A car collided with a female pedestrian on the N80. The female pedestrian, aged in her 70s was fatally injured as a result of the collision.

“Her body has been removed from the scene and has been taken to the Mortuary in Waterford Regional Hospital where a post mortem will take place in due course.

“The male driver (aged in his 20s) of the car was uninjured.”

The N80 in the townland of Rathcrogue, Carlow is currently closed and will remain closed overnight. A technical examination of the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators will take place in the morning. Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward and are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area at the time of the collision to make this footage available to Gardaí.
