Israel has said that at least 199 people are now thought to have been taken hostage by Hamas, after its surprise attack on October 7th.
Among them are older people, women, children and foreigners.
Several are believed to have been abducted from the Supernova music festival in southern Israel.
Below are some of the profiles of people credibly reported to have been taken hostage by Hamas from Israel.
Peace campaigner
Vivian Silver (74), one of Israel's best-known campaigners for peace with the Palestinians, has been missing since the Hamas attack.
Her son Yonatan told the BBC that she held a meeting with international supporters of her group, Women Wage Peace, only a few days before the onset of the war. Her last communication was to say that her home, kibbutz Be'eri, near the Gaza border, was under attack.
Non-profit founder
Dr Shoshan Haran is the founder of non-profit organisation Fair Planet. She is believed to have been taken hostage along with her husband, Avshal Haran (65), daughter Adi Shoham, her partner Tal Shoham and their children, Naveh (8) and Yahel (3).
Fair Planet said they lost contact with Dr Haran after the attack by Hamas, but Avshal's phone was tracked to Gaza and they believe the whole family was taken.
Grandmother
Grandmother Yaffa Adar (85) was kidnapped from a kibbutz close to the border with Gaza.
A video circulating online shows Adar, with a defiant expression on her face, being driven on a golf cart into the Palestinian enclave.
The family of the bespectacled grey-haired woman recognised her instantly.
"At 9am she texted us that there are terrorists in the roads of the kibbutz shooting, shouting. That's the last message we got from her and then we lost contact," said her granddaughter Adva.
Despite her resolve, Adva said, she is concerned her grandmother's health will deteriorate rapidly without the medication she needs.
"I have a hope that they will understand that these people have done nothing wrong," Adva said of the hostages. "I hope they treat them okay. Please bring them back home for us. They have done nothing wrong".
Kindergarten teacher and young children
Shiri, Yarden, Ariel and Kfir Bibas are believed to have been abducted from the kibbutz in southern Israel where they lived.
Footage circulated on social media is thought to capture the moment the family was taken by Hamas from their home in the Nir Oz kibbutz.
Shiri, a kindergarten teacher, was pictured holding Ariel, aged 3, and 9-month-old Kfir, surrounded by militants.
Tourist
Shani Louk, a tattoo artist and tourist from Germany, was attending the Supernova music festival in southern Israel.
Her mother said she had evidence her daughter is still alive and called on the German government to get involved.
Ricarda Louk told German newspaper Bild: "We now have evidence that Shani is alive but has a serious head injury and is in critical condition. Every minute is critical."
"You have to act quickly and get Shani out of the Gaza Strip!" she said in the message directed at German officials. "We shouldn’t argue about questions of jurisdiction now!" – Additional reporting: Reuters
