With the ceaseless onslaught of news, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed – particularly if you’re facing tightened Covid restrictions on top of everything else.
Before you give into the urge to throw your phone out the window, why not use it for a bit of light relief instead? Instagram is ideal if you need a bit of gentle comedy in your life – and laughing can help stimulate endorphins and boost your mood.
If you’re not sure where to start, try these humorous accounts…
1. Betches
For pure memes, look no further than Betches. The account reposts some of the funniest Tweets and videos online, along with its own skits from Betches employees, covering everything from Zoom struggles to dealing with your family.
2. Texts From Your Ex
Who among us hasn’t either been on the receiving end of a cringe-worthy text from an ex, or – even worse – sent one? For this account, people anonymously send in screenshots of some of the funniest/weirdest/worst texts they’ve had from an ex – and they’re posted for all of us to enjoy.
3. Dude With Sign
The name of this Instagram account really tells you everything you need to know: it features a dude, holding a sign. He writes funny messages on placards like, ‘I still don’t understand the reason for daylight savings,’ and, ‘Don’t send LMAO if you aren’t laughing’. They’re a bit random, always relatable, and guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.
4. Elsa Majimbo
There’s a reason Elsa Majimbo has blown up this year. The Kenyan student first went viral during the initial wave of the pandemic, filming surreal videos from her bedroom, spoofing what’s going on in the world while constantly eating crisps and giggling. Whether she’s talking about skipping the gym in lockdown or cancelling plans with friends, she’ll have you in stitches. Rihanna’s a fan, and hired Majimbo to do a video for Fenty sunglasses.
5. Chelsea Peretti
You might recognise Chelsea Peretti as Gina from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and the comedian is well worth a follow on Instagram. Her signature wacky humour is felt in all her posts, and she occasionally treats us to skits like her mock make-up tutorials.
6. Munya Chawawa
Instagram gives comedians a platform to react quickly to what’s happening in the world, and few do that as well as Munya Chawawa. Whether it’s the new tier system introduced in England, the cancelled Notting Hill Carnival or a faux pas made by a brand during Black History Month, Chawawa is always on hand with satirical videos made within hours of anything happening. He’s created a set of characters – like Unknown P (a spoof on the rapper Unknown T) or Barty Crease, the mock newsreader. The news cycle can feel relentless, so if you want a more comic take on things, Chawawa is the perfect person to follow.
