Although an overwhelming 90 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds feel St Patrick's Day portrays Ireland in a positive way, three quarters of people over 55 feel the annual celebrations feeds into the Irish stereotypes of drinking.
A recent iReach survey found 41 per cent of the older cohort believe far too much alcohol is consumed on St Patrick's Day, while a further 36 per cent said a lot was consumed.
Almost three quarters of respondents said they like the celebrations, although 63 per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds said parades overseas were better than their Irish counterparts, but 53 per cent said the day has become too commercialised.
Almost all of those surveyed aged between 18-24 said they are proud of how St Patrick's Day is celebrated around the world, with just 18 per cent of respondents saying they will not celebrate next Thursday.
This year will mark the return of full celebrations, after two years of cancellations due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Parades will once again be held around the country to mark St Patrick's Day, including in Dublin city centre where Olympian Kellie Harrington and Paralympian Ellen Keane will act grand marshals.
