Do it for the gaffer - Kelly

Leeds captain Gary Kelly wants his team-mates to “do it for the gaffer” and keep their FA Cup run going after beating Crystal Palace 2-1 to reach the sixth round.

Kelly scored the opening goal at Selhurst Park from a quickly-taken free-kick, before the First Division side equalised through Julian Gray.

But Harry Kewell, on target for Australia in his country’s 3-1 win over England at Upton Park in midweek, hit the winner for the Premiership side after a surging run late in the game.

Palace were unfortunate to see Tommy Black’s effort not given as a goal after his scrambled shot crossed the line, and Kelly conceded: “It was always going to be tough.

“The dress rehearsal was maybe against Gillingham (in the previous round).

“But it was a great professional performance, we came here and worked hard.”

Leeds see the cup as a “way into Europe” after their disappointing season, according to Kelly.

“So long as we do the right things on the pitch for the gaffer,” he added on Sky Sports.

“We have let ourselves down but it’s important we all stick together. The players want to do it for the gaffer.”

Kewell said of his goal: “I don’t remember too much about it. I wasn’t having a great game up until then.”
