Galway claim FBD League title

Mayo lost their first competitive match of the season as Galway swept to the Connacht FBD League title courtesy of a 2-08 to 0-09 final win at Tuam.

Mayo boss Mickey Moran's five-game winning streak came to an end as Frankie Burke and substitute Matthew Clancy goaled in each half for the hosts.

Annaghdown clubman Burke, a former minor starlet, made the most of a fumble by goalkeeper Fintan Ruddy under the Mayo crossbar to net in the ninth minute.

Galway's Derek Savage and Cormac Bane both pointed early, while Austin O'Malley hit a brace for Mayo, who trailed by 0-04 to 1-03 at half-time.

James Gill and Peadar Gardiner also registered first-half points for Moran's side.

With both Conor Mortimer, who was fresh from helping DCU to the Sigerson Cup glory last night, and Billy Joe Padden brought off the bench, Mayo looked a more complete outfit in the second half.

But two more Savage points, allied to Clancy's timely goal, saw Peter Ford's side ease home to book a trip to New York later in the year.
