A US Navy fighter jet has been reported missing in southern Florida.

A US Navy fighter jet has been reported missing in southern Florida.

The F/A-18 fighter jet was flying from Virginia to Key West, Florida, when it was reported missing, Navy officials said.

There have been unconfirmed reports the jet crashed near Fort Piece, Florida.

"A US Navy F/A-18C Hornet aircraft has been reported missing in southern Florida," Navy Commander Hal Pitman, a spokesman for the US Atlantic forces in Norfolk, Virginia, is reported as saying.

The aircraft was based at Oceana Naval Air Station at Virginia Beach, Virginia, and was overdue at Key West, Florida.
