Rhasidat Adeleke finished fourth in the final of the 400-metre final in the Olympics.
Adeleke ran a time of 49.28 as she just missed out on a medal.
The race was won by Marileidy Paulino in an Olympic record time of 48.17.
Salwa Eid Naser finished second with a time of 48.53, with Natala Kaczmarek in third with a time of 48.98.
Adeleke gave everything in the race and was in third for stages in the race, but was beaten to the bronze medal by Kaczmarek.
While Adeleke was disappointed in her performance, there is no doubting the future is bright for the 21-year-old.
Adeleke ran the best ever Olympic performance by an Irish sprinter, and will only grow by the time 2028 arrives.
The Tallaght athlete may not be on the podium tonight, but she has the potential to be the star of Irish athletics for the next decade.
Speaking after the race, Adeleke said: “Definitely disappointed. There was so much more there than what I did today. This is just part of the game, you win some, you lose some. It’s all about showing up on the day.
"Today just wasn’t my day. I just appreciate everyone who’s been showing up for me, everyone who’s supported me. I appreciate my whole team, my coach, my whole family, my whole support team. It means so much.
“I didn’t achieve my dreams today but in the future I just hope there’s more podiums there and I’ll be able to perform at my best when it’s most important. It just wasn’t meant to be today.
"It’s my first Olympics, I’m grateful to be healthy and, going forward, I want to be exactly where I want to be. That’s what I’m going to be working towards in the future. I’m hungrier than ever!”
The action may not be over yet for Adeleke, as she may be involved with the 4x400 relay team in the final on Saturday.
