Comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner scooped a cool £250,000 for charity in a special celebrity edition of quiz show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

The former flatmates were within sight of the £1m jackpot but decided to play it safe when confronted with the question: ‘‘Which flower is the symbol for Japan?’’

West Bromwich Albion fan Frank correctly thought the answer was ‘‘chrysanthemum’’ but the pair opted not to risk their £250,000 winnings.

They decided to split the money between the Catholic Children’s Society and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund.

The two-part celebrity special also starred father and daughter pair Jimmy and Liza Tarbuck, Hollyoaks stars Julie Peasgood and Kate McEnery, and Neil and Christine Hamilton.

The Tarbucks and the Hollyoaks stars both won £16,000 for charity, but the Hamiltons could only manage a disappointing £1,000.

The pair blew £3,000 after wrongly naming Jessica Lange as the woman who won an Oscar for best supporting actress in the 1988 film The Accidental Tourist.

Mrs Hamilton burst into tears when told by host Chris Tarrant that the correct answer was Geena Davis.
