Former Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar has backed former Chelsea manager Graham Potter to take over as Liverpool manager.

Jurgen Klopp shocked the world last week when he announced he would be stepping down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season.

Klopp has brought huge success to Anfield, as he ended their 30 year wait for a Premier League title, as well as winning the Champions League final in 2019 among his achievements.

As the search for his successor begins, former midfielder Xabi Alonso has been tipped by many to take over, with his Bayer Leverkusen side top of the Bundesliga.

Speaking on his potential appointment, Bruce Grobbelaar has been impressed by what he has seen from the former Spanish midfielder.

"Xabi Alonso has done a marvellous job there in Germany. I know he is going to be inundated on phone calls if he is the next one.

"You look at all the managers that around, people are throwing in other managers in the hat. You look at Zinedine Zidane, when he managed, he managed team that was already there, he never developed any players."

Grobbelaar has backed Potter to succeed at Anfield if he was to be appointed. Potter has been out of the game since he was sacked by Chelsea last April.

Despite the difficulties he faced at Chelsea, Grobbelaar is backing him to thrive in the environment at Liverpool.

"For me, just taking one out of the hat somewhere else is Graham Potter. What he did at Brighton, mould young players and get them into the first team in that environment, he would be very fitting to come into Liverpool because we have great youngsters and he could carry on the legacy that Klopp has left.

"Chelsea is a different entity, and a different dynamic. We are a family side. Everybody in Liverpool football club, when you are brought in, you are part of a family. It is very different at other football clubs.

Grobbelaar also spoke on the current situation of Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher, who has been behind Alison in the pecking order.

While the 25-year-old has had some opportunities in the Premier League this season, majority of his appearances have come in cup competitions.

Looking at the situation, Grobbelaar said the best move for all parties could be a loan or buy-back clause.

"We've got a beautiful goalkeeper in Caoimhín Kelleher. When the manager comes out and says we've got the best goalkeeper in the world and the second best goalkeeper here - talking about Caoimhín - it's a great accolade," said the 66-year-old ex-Zimbabwe international.

"But yes, from the Irish point of view, they'd rather have him play more games and we are playing him in some of the cup games.

"But if there was a little thing that you could do to make him much better than he is, is to give him games.

"Maybe it could be that Liverpool could put him out on loan or sell to him a club with a buy-back clause and see if Alisson stays.
