Cratloe’s senior hurling championship game against Eire Óg was postponed last Sunday after it was revealed that a player had tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday.
24 players were later tested, with five more positive tests returned.
Cratloe had recently played Clondegad with one player on the team who was later among the group of positive tests.
As a result, 18 Clondegad footballers have been advised by the HSE to self-isolate, along with the Cratloe players.
There is a small portion at this point in time positive, but they’re still waiting for maybe 10 or 15 results to come in.
Pat FitzGerald, general secretary of Clare GAA, confirmed that “in the region of 40 people have had to isolate” and will continue to do so up until next Wednesday evening.
He said all are currently being tested with the vast majority returning negative.
“There is a small portion at this point in time positive, but they’re still waiting for maybe 10 or 15 results to come in,” he added.
The cases are not said to be linked to GAA activity.
Championship dates
Clare may now push back the dates of their county senior hurling and football championships in order to accommodate the participation of players currently isolating.
Other county GAA clubs expressed solidarity with Cratloe’s desire to remain in the championships during a virtual Clare county board meeting yesterday evening.
Mr FitzGerald said no decision had been made yet: “If we’re going to allow the club to remain in the competition, then certainly the whole competition would have to be put back for a few weeks.”
“The management committee [of the Clare County Board] who have that responsibility haven’t made any decision on it as of yet,” he said.
