Drogheda United have distanced themselves from MMA fighter Conor McGregor after he posted a picture of himself with the FAI Cup.
Drogheda landed the silverware with a 2-0 win over Derry City in the final back in November and McGregor's cousin Warren Davis was a member of the team.
The trophy made it's way into the MMA fighter's hands and on Tuesday afternoon, McGregor initially posted a picture with the caption: "Yup the gaf! FAI cup in the house! Congrats my cuz Warren on winning the fai trophy with @dundalkfc!
"That’s two of my cousins now who have won this prestigious Irish Football League trophy. One with Bohs, Keith, and one with Dundalk, Warren!! Tremendous! It’s in the blood!"
McGregor would later correct the post to reference Drogheda rather than their arch-rivals before he changed it again so it read: "How much is it to buy a league of Ireland team I might buy two?"
In response to the post, Drogheda United released the following statement on their official website - which temporarily crashed due to heavy traffic - to reject the connection to McGregor.
"A social media post has been brought to our attention today regarding the FAI Cup.
"Those pictured are a close relation to one of our first team players, who like all the other players had custody of the cup to celebrate with their families at different intervals.
"Drogheda United do not associate ourselves with the individual who made the social media post in any way, or with any unauthorised brands mentioned."
