Lionel Messi has confirmed he will remain with Barcelona following weeks of speculation about a potential departure from the club.

In an interview with Goal, the 33-year-old said he would "continue at the club".

Messi made his debut for the Catalan giants at 16 in 2003 and he has gone on to become one of the greatest players ever to grace the sport.

There had been much discussion over a clause in his contract that would have allowed him to leave for free at the end of this season.

However, Barcelona contended this, claiming that the prolonged season due to the Covid-19 pandemic did not count in the clause. According to the club, this meant it expired in May.

Barcelona's season ended on August 14th when they were knocked out of the Champions League in a humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich, who went on to win the competition.

Messi’s representatives sent a fax to the club on August 25th expressing his desire to leave. Messi was reportedly determined to leave Barcelona, with some reports in the Spanish press even claiming that he had held discussions with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

Messi enjoyed some of the most successful days of his glittering career playing under Guardiola, including Champions League victories in 2009 and 2011.

However, LaLiga sided with Barcelona in the dispute. A statement last Sunday read: “In compliance with the applicable regulations, and following the corresponding procedure in these cases, LaLiga will not carry out the prior visa process for the player to be removed from the federation if they have not previously paid the amount of said clause.”

In response to a further letter from Jorge Messi, the player's father and agent, LaLiga said: “LaLiga has responded to the message received from the representatives of the player Leo Messi.

“In its response, LaLiga notes that their interpretation of the contract is out of context and far removed from its literal state. LaLiga reiterates its statement published on August 30.”

Messi said he has decided to stay as the only way to secure a move would be to bring the club he has played for since the age of 13 to court, something which he does not want to do.

“I am going to continue in the club because the president (Josep Maria Bartomeu) told me that the only way to leave was to pay the 700million euros clause, and that is impossible, and then the only other way was to go to court,” he told Goal.com.

“I would never go to court against Barca because it is the club that I love, that gave me everything since I arrived, it is the club of my life, I have made my life here.”
