Goals from John Hoyne and Diarmuid Mackey in the 13th and 28th mins set up reigning league champions Kilkenny for a deserved victory over Waterford at Walsh Park.

Kilkenny led by 2-05 to 0-09 at half-time and despite Waterford cutting the deficit within 30 seconds of the restart, the All Ireland champions were always in command.

Goals from DJ Carey in the 41st minute and Eddie Brennan seven minutes later saw the winners lead by 4-06 to 0-11 entering the final quarter.

Waterford, who lined out without team captain Tony Browne and All-Star Eoin Kelly, suffered a major setback eight minutes into the second half when corner-back Brian Flannery was sent off with a second yellow card.

The closing stages saw Kilkenny rifle over five unanswered points in as many minutes to get heir league campaign off to an impressive start.
