Earlier in the evening Declan Devine celebrated his new contract as Candystripes boss by overseeing a 3-1 win at the Ryan McBride Brandywell. Derry CIty turned around a one-goal deficit after the first half against Cork City thanks to an own-goal equaliser four minutes into the second half by Kevin O'Connor, followed by a goal by Derry's Adam Hammill in the 52nd minute.
While both sides showed merit, Derry arguably deserved the lead in the run of play. The Friday match started very positvely for the Cork, with Joseph Olowu scoring the team's first away goal this season to put the visitors in front in the first three minutes at the Brandywell. However, even Olowu's fortunes took a turn for the worse, as he was subsituted after 33 minutes with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile the FAI has confirmed that the Republic of Ireland’s Nations League game with Bulgaria will be played in Sofia. There had been doubt the game could go ahead as planned on September 3rd, as Bulgaria is not currently on Ireland’s ‘green’ travel list. However, an exemption has been made for the squad to travel for a game that goes ahead behind closed doors.
