Man arrested in Cork after ramming garda vehicles

Gardaí have arrested a man in his 30s following an incident during which garda vehicles were rammed by a van containing a number of children in Co Cork.

The incident took place at around 9.45pm on Wednesday, with two garda vehicles extensively damaged in addition to three other vehicles which received minor damage.

Following a containment operation by gardaí, the van was eventually stopped using a stringer device and the driver was arrested.

Passengers in the van, including a number of children, were taken to hospital for assessment, while two gardaí also received treatement.

Bank of Ireland fine

Bank of Ireland (BOI) has been fined a record €100,520,000 by the Central Bank for overcharging customers denied mortgages that track base rates.

The fine is in respect of 15,910 tracker mortgage customer accounts which were impacted between August 2004 and June 2022.

The Central Bank's investigation found that 50 properties, including 25 family homes, were lost by impacted customers due to the bank's failings.

Report into 999 calls cancelled by gardaí

A report into the controversy surrounding the cancelling of emergency 999 calls by gardaí has identified several incidents with “substantial shortcomings” in call handling. The Policing Authority has published its final report on the police force’s review of the closure of computer-aided dispatch (CAD) incidents.

The report said: “At times, this meant that Garda Siochana members were dispatched to the wrong locations, and callers could not be re-contacted."

Ryanair calls on governments to intervene over French air traffic control strikes

Ryanair has called on the Irish and other European governments to intervene in ongoing strike action by some French air traffic controllers.

Ryanair says it expects to cancel up to 100 flights affecting about 18,000 passengers while another 500 flights - impacting 90,000 passengers - will face very long delays and cancellation of flights overflying French airspace.
