Government opt to retain TV licence fees despite report recommendation

The TV licence fee is here to stay, despite recommendations from the Future of Media Commission that the system should be phased out by 2024.

The commission's report, published on Tuesday morning, makes 50 recommendations, including that funding for Public Service Media (PSM) should shift from the current system of TV licence fees and Exchequer funds to one "based entirely on general Exchequer funds".

Emergency operation at Shannon Airport for passenger jet with hydraulic issues

A US-bound passenger jet that suffered ‘serious hydraulic issues’ soon after taking off from an airport in Scotland, has made and emergency landing at Shannon Airport.

Delta Air Lines flight DL-123 took off from Edinburgh Airport at around 12.30pm bound for Boston in the United States. The Boeing 767-300(ER) jet had climbed to 33,000 feet and levelled off before the flight crew reported an issue with one of the aircraft’s hydraulic systems.

The crew entered a holding pattern off the Scottish coast as they attempted to troubleshoot the problem. The aircraft circled for about 15 minutes before the crew decided to divert to Shannon which, at 3,199 metres, is the longest runway in Ireland.

Government to commit €1.5 billion in funding to Defence Forces

The Government has committed to new funding for Defence Forces recruitment, equipment and pay increases every year until 2028.

As The Irish Times reports, it comes after ministers approved proposals from Minister for Defence Simon Coveney at Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting.

Mr Coveney’s proposals, based on the report of the Commission on the Defence Forces which was published earlier this year, will mean that defence funding will rise from the current level of €1.1 billion to at least €1.5 billion by 2028.

The Government said the move represents a steep change in defence funding, and will lead to a larger, better-equipped and better-paid military.
