Heatwave brings record temperature
Ireland's highest temperature of the 21st century has been provisionally recorded in Dublin.
The temperature reached 33 degrees Celsius in Phoenix Park on Monday afternoon, 12.8 degrees above average for the weather station at this time of year.
Once verified, the temperature would be Ireland’s 2nd highest on record and the hottest in 135 years. The reading is only 0.3 degrees below the all-time record – 33.3 degrees at Kilkenny Castle on June 26th, 1887.
The extreme heat comes amid a nationwide warning for "exceptionally warm weather" until 7pm on Tuesday.
Irishman shot in Marbella
An Irishman is among five people who have been injured in a shooting and stabbing incident at a beach club in Marbella, Spain.
Spanish police said four people were taken to hospital in the early hours of Monday morning having suffered gunshot wounds at Opium Beach Club near Marbella town.
It is understood that the 32-year-old Irishman was one of two people receiving treatment in intensive care after he was shot in the chest.
The suspect, a Dutch man, has been arrested but has also been taken to hospital for treatment having suffered stab wounds to his head and chest.
Today in the courts
The family of a man who it was claimed allegedly slipped and fell on a marble staircase at a Cork wedding venue and who was later diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury has settled a High Court action for €250,000.
Calves are being transported from Ireland by sea to mainland Europe in a manner that "amounts to animal cruelty" and is in breach of EU regulations on animal welfare, the High Court also heard.
Three people accused of breaching publication restrictions during the trial of the murder of teenager Ana Kriégel meanwhile won a High Court challenge over how their cases were dealt with in the District Court.
Elsewhere, nine motorists were given fines totalling €139,000 after ignoring court prosecutions and thousands of warning letters for repeatedly avoiding paying M50 tolls.
The Central Criminal Court sentenced a Sligo man to 11 years in prison for the rape, indecent and sexual assault of three children over three decades ago.
Finally, a man who raided his local convenience store three times in one week was jailed for three and a half years.
Junior Cycle curriculum revamp
Pornography, consent and gender stereotyping will soon become part of the Junior Cycle curriculum.
It follows a review conducted by the Department of Education which found it was "heavily concerned" with aspects of Ireland's relationships and sexuality programme.
Every school, irrespective of their ethos, will have to deliver the revamped version of the subject.
Minister for Education Norma Foley has described the proposed revamp as “a step in the right direction” and as the catalyst to empowering students to cope with life in the 21st century.
