Annual inflation stays at 9.1%

Headline inflation in the Irish economy remained at a near four-decade high last month, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

Consumer prices in the Republic rose by an average of 9.1 per cent in the 12 months to July, which is the same increase seen in June.

The main drivers of higher living costs were housing, energy, fuel and transport.

Man drowns in River Barrow

A man drowned on Wednesday night when he got into difficulty in the River Barrow in Carlow town.

The incident occurred at around 9.20pm on Wednesday close to the town park area in Graiguecullen.

The man, who is believed to be in his 30s and from the area, got into difficulty shortly after entering the river.

High temperature warning

Parts of the country reached temperatures of 30 degrees today, as Ireland experiences what is likely to be the final heatwave of the summer.

A spokesman for Met Éireann confirmed that the provisional highest temperature of the day was 30.2 degrees at Oakpark, Co Carlow.

A nationwide status yellow high temperature warning will be in effect from tomorrow.

Sean McCarthy murder

A man has been remanded in custody charged with murder after the body of Ballymun man Sean McCarthy was found in an apartment in Drumcondra, Dublin at the weekend.

Dean Caffrey (36), of Beau Court, Achill Road, Dublin 9, appeared before Judge Conal Gibbons at Dublin District Court on Thursday morning.

He is charged with murdering Sean McCarthy on August 2nd at Mr Caffrey’s home.
