Man dies following assault by large group of people in Co Kildare
A man who was critically ill following a serious assault in Monasterevin, Co Kildare on Sunday has died.
The man, aged in his 20s, who was found unresponsive at the scene and taken to Tallaght University Hospital has since passed away. He was pronounced dead on Monday afternoon.
The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a postmortem will be conducted by Chief State Pathologist, Dr Linda Mulligan.
The results of the post-mortem will determine the course of the investigation.
Shortly after 12:30am on Sunday, Gardaí and Emergency Services attended at Dublin Street, Monasterevin following reports of an altercation involving a group of people at the entrance of a premises.
A second man, believed to be his father and aged in his 50s, was treated for serious injuries and has been transferred to Tallaght University Hospital where his condition remains serious.
Man arrested after gardaí seize cocaine worth €3.2m in Dublin
Gardaí have seized suspected cocaine worth €3.2 million and arrested one man as part of an investigation into the sale and supply of drugs in Dublin.
The seizure and arrest followed a search of a residence in Clondalkin on Sunday evening.
During the course of the search, gardaí located and seized over 40 blocks of suspected cocaine, with an estimated street value of €3.2 million.
Gardaí also seized drug paraphernalia and €21,500 in cash.
The man, aged in his late 30s, was arrested and taken to Lucan Garda Station where he is currently detained.
Public sector nurses and midwives to vote on strike action
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) will begin balloting all nurses and midwives who are public sector employees for potential industrial action.
In a statement the organisation said the Government have “failed to return to protracted negotiations on renegotiating the current public sector pay deal ‘Building Momentum’ with a palatable offer on pay.”
A week-long pre ballot information campaign for INMO members will commence on August 24th with a view to commence balloting for industrial action on September 1st, should talks with the Government fall through.
Michael Collins' family mark centenary of his death
Members of the Defence Forces have been joined by some of Michael Collins’ family at an event to mark the centenary of his death.
The event, held at Cathal Brugha Barracks in Dublin on Monday, came 100 years after Mr Collins was shot and killed during an ambush by anti-treaty forces near Béal na Bláth, Co Cork, during the civil war.
Some of his relatives visited the Defence Forces Military Archives at the barracks, and the museum which is home to Mr Collins’ death mask.
Tributes pour in for teenager killed in road collision in Co Limerick
Tributes poured in on Monday for a young pedestrian who was killed in a road traffic collision in Cappamore, Co Limerick, in the early hours of Sunday.
The victim, named locally as Donnacha Ryan (Luke), from Shanacloon, Cappamore, was treated by paramedics at the scene but was pronounced dead later at University Hospital Limerick.
The fatal collision involving a car and Mr Ryan, who celebrated his 18th birthday only days before, happened on a local road at Dromsally, near Cappamore.
