Video: Medical scientists call off further strike action, PayPal announce Irish job losses

Strike update

Medical scientists have suspended further industrial action in their dispute over pay and conditions and accepted an invitation to attend the Labour Court for exploratory talks.

A strike had been staged around the country today, causing tens of thousands of medical procedures and appointments to be cancelled.

PayPal job losses

PayPal has confirmed it is to cut a total of 307 jobs from its Irish operations in Dundalk and Dublin.

A company spokesperson said: "We are proposing to remove a selection of roles in Dundalk and Dublin subject to consultation with employees and we notified employees in the affected teams of the consultation earlier today."

Responding to the announcement, Minister for Employment Leo Varadkar said the news "will come as a real shock to the staff working at PayPal’s Dundalk and Blanchardstown offices, their families and communities."

Cyclist injured

A male teenager is in serious condition following a crash in Co Galway on Monday evening.

The cyclist was involved in a collision with a truck at Russellstown, Miltown in Tuam shortly after 5pm.

Gardaí attended the scene and the teenager was taken to University Hospital Galway for treatment. He has since been transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

Protocol issues

Senior US Democrat Richard Neal said the issue over the Northern Ireland Protocol seems to be “manufactured” – and that there is a “vagueness” from the UK over why legislation is being introduced to unilaterally override parts of it.

Mr Neal is leading a bipartisan US delegation made up of four Democrats and four Republicans which has met with political leaders in Belgium, the UK and Ireland in recent days.

As part of the diplomatic trip, the delegation is visiting Ireland this week amid tensions caused by the post-Brexit trading arrangements, and the UK government’s threat to introduce legislation that would unilaterally override parts of the protocol.
