Warning over rising Covid-19 cases as patients in hospital almost double in fortnight
The Minister for Health has warned about rising Covid-19 cases after the number of patients in hospital almost double in less than a fortnight.
Stephen Donnelly said it has soared to over 300 patients with Covid-19 from around 160 a week and a half ago.
Figures from the Department of Health shows a sharp rise since the end of May.
Tánaiste Leo Varadkar warned it could be the start of a Covid “summer wave”, while Mr Donnelly said they are watching the figures closely.
Man accused of murdering wife and children found dead in Midlands Prison
A man accused of murdering his wife and two young children at their south Dublin home in 2020 has been found dead at Midlands Prison.
Sameer Syed (38) was due to stand trial at the Central Criminal Court on June 15th for the murder of his wife Seema Banu (37), his daughter Asfira Riza (11) and son Faizan Syed (6) at Llewellyn Court, Rathfarnham, Dublin 16 in October 2020. His trial was expected to last five weeks.
The Irish Prison Service said it could confirm “the death of a prisoner in the Midlands Prison” on Thursday but provided no further detail.
Gardaí arrest 182 people for drink and drug driving over bank holiday weekend
Gardaí arrested 182 people for drink and drug driving over the June bank holiday weekend, while there were 2,960 detections for speeding offences.
Over the long weekend, 69 of those drivers were arrested for alleged drug driving, while 113 drivers were arrested for alleged drink driving.
This compares to 32 arrests for drug driving and 115 arrests for drink driving in 2019.
Tragically, eight people died in six fatal road collisions over the bank holiday weekend. Three of those were drivers, three motorcyclists, one passenger and one pedestrian.
Labour UK government would axe laws that override protocol, Starmer vows
A UK Labour government would axe laws designed to unilaterally override aspects of Brexit’s Northern Ireland Protocol, Sir Keir Starmer has vowed.
The Labour leader made the pledge on a visit to Belfast where he met with political leaders.
His trip to the Ireland, which also involved meetings with Government ministers in Dublin, came amid the deepening row over the post-Brexit Irish Sea trading arrangements.
The UK government has confirmed it will table legislation at Westminster on Monday that will give ministers powers to scrap parts of the protocol.
Revolutionary cancer therapy 40% success rate, says Donnelly
Around 40 per cent of patients treated with a revolutionary cancer therapy are seeing successful results, according to the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly.
CAR – T (Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell) therapy works by genetically engineering an individual’s T-cells to recognise and destroy cancer cells.
Mr Donnelly and EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides visited patients at St James’s Hospital in Dublin, one of Ireland’s eight designated cancer centres for adults, on Friday.
