Ukraine will find out today if the European Commission supports it bid to become a candidate to join the EU.
It will give an opinion later but the final decision will be made at a European Union summit of national leaders next week.
France, Germany, Italy and Romania have backed EU candidate status for Ukraine and Moldova in a concerted effort to settle doubts about their level of support for Kyiv in Russia’s ongoing war.
Dublin Green Party MEP Ciaran Cuffe says it's a complex and lengthy process and it could take a long time before EU membership is granted.
“Albania and North Macedonia are getting quite frustrated, they have been in the queue for over a decade now. They want to get the green light as well and they want to move forward.
“So I think, Ukraine, while most European Union members want Ukraine to join the club, as it were, we all have to realise it’s going to be a long process.”
